PROGRAMS SUPPORTED BY NYFC

The mission of New Yorkers For Children (NYFC) is to improve the lives of children and families served by the Administration for Children's Services (Children's Services) by providing the private resources needed to assist Children's Services and by increasing the private sector's awareness of child welfare issues.

Individual Development Account Initiative

An Individual Development Account (IDA) is a unique savings instrument that will enable youth in foster care, ages 16-21, opportunities to save for specific asset purchases (education and homeownership) that will support economic independence. Participants contribute to these accounts with earned income and these contributions are matched with a mix of government and private funds that enable purchase of an approved asset goal.

Network to Success

Network to Success events provide young people in foster care, who are high school and college students, with exposure to a variety of industries and potential career paths as they begin to formulate plans for their future. Students are invited to meet a “dream team” of professionals from diverse industries and learn about potential careers.

Back-to-School Package Program

The Back-to-School Package program provides college-enrolled youth in foster care with the tools necessary to succeed during their entire college experience. Each Back-to-School package is valued at over $2,500 and includes a laptop computer, printer, software, training and school supplies.

Guardian Scholars Program

The NYFC Guardian Scholars program is a comprehensive program for youth in foster care that will experience significant hardships in their efforts to gain a college education. These youth are forced to make difficult transitions into adulthood, often without traditional family support. By providing this supplemental college scholarship and year-round housing in the Hunter College dorms, the NYFC Guardian Scholars program provides the opportunity to change individual lives and helps the young people realize true independence and reach their full potential.

NYFC Spirit Award

A $10,000 College Scholarship is awarded to a young person in foster care who is succeeding in college with the help of New Yorkers For Children. Each year the recipient is a young person who has demonstrated outstanding leadership skills, a commitment to community and the determination and ability to overcome the barriers to academic success. The Spirit Award is presented at the NYFC Annual Fall Gala and the recipient becomes a spokesperson for NYC’s youth in foster care and the liaison to NYFC.

Bard College Clemente Program Fellowship

The Bard College Clemente Program Fellowship is a summer program through which youth in foster care that excel academically can access opportunities that will prepare them for the expectations of college level work.

Youth Public Policy and Advocacy Planning

The Youth Public Policy and Advocacy (YPPA) program engages current and former youth in foster care to advocate and lobby for reform and to improve the conditions and outcomes for youth in care.

Children of Incarcerated Parents Program

CHIPP offers a visiting program at Rikers Island and visiting services to City, State and Federal correctional facilities for those children in foster care whose parents are incarcerated.  NYFC supports a Special Events and Holiday Program and Photo Program to help ensure that the bonds between children and their parents are maintained.
