WELCOME TO NEW YORKERS FOR CHILDREN

2011 Educational Conference Sponsored by Neuberger Berman

NYFC held its third annual Educational Conference sponsored by the Neuberger Berman Foundation on April 21, 2011 at John Jay College of Criminal Justice to help high school students in foster care plan for post-secondary education. The conference was a joint effort between NYFC, the Administration for Children’s Services (ACS), Office of Children & Family Services (OCFS), Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC), the Professional Development Program (PDP), foster care agencies, and educational organizations throughout New York City. Members of NYFC’s Youth Advisory Board and the HESC Youth Ambassadors were on hand to set up, check in the attendees, and direct participants throughout the day.

The conference included welcome and opening remarks by Susan Magazine, NYFC Executive Director and Nicholas Scoppetta, NYFC President of the Board of Director. Alfonso Wyatt, Fund for the City of New York, delivered the keynote speech, encouraging and inspiring the youth in attendance to pursue their higher education goals. Anne Williams-Isom, Harlem’s Children Zone, moderated the youth panel of NYFC Guardian Scholars, Youth Advisory Board members, and HESC Youth Ambassadors who discussed their educational experiences and offered advice on taking next steps to apply to college. The students also attended workshops on topics such as financial aid, the application process, selecting a college, and college life. Many students also took advantage of the resource tables set up during lunch on CUNY and SUNY schools, special opportunity programs, college access programs, and scholarship opportunities.

The OPTIONS Center, HESC, and the Education Training Voucher (ETV) co-led the workshops with youth leaders from the NYFC Youth Advisory Board and the HESC Youth Ambassadors Program. Photography was donated by Shu Luan Chen.
