WELCOME TO NEW YORKERS FOR CHILDREN

In Recognition of National Foster Care Awareness MonthHelp Us Make a Call That Can Change a Life

Glenn was in his senior year at Howard University when he learned that his financial aid and student loans weren’t going to cover his tuition.  Having just aged out of foster care, Glenn didn’t have anywhere to turn for support.  He tried applying to banks and foundations for additional loans and scholarships, but was told over and over again that he wasn’t eligible for their programs.

With his tuition bill overdue, Glenn’s school gave him three days to move out of his dorm.  After working so hard on his education, it was devastating to think that he may not be able to finish school.  As he began packing up his belongings, Glenn received a phone call that would change his life.

The call was from New Yorkers For Children (NYFC), informing him that he had been selected as an NYFC Spirit Award recipient and would be receiving a $10,000 scholarship to support his educational expenses.  Because of this gift, Glenn was able to finish his studies and graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology.  Eventually, Glenn continued on to pursue his Masters degree at Howard University where he was inducted into Beta Gamma Sigma, an international honors business organization whose membership requires students to be in the top 20% of their class.  This month Glenn will graduate from Howard University with an MBA.  This month is also National Foster Care Awareness Month

Glenn is a shining example of what a young person in foster care can become when he or she is given the support they need.  Like thousands of other youth, Glenn struggled after aging out of care to become independent.  Looking back, his proudest accomplishment is his successful transition out of foster care.  He is determined to help other young people by being an advocate and role model for youth in foster care.

There are nearly 13,000 children in foster care in New York City.  Like Glenn, they all have amazing potential – they just need a little help.  With your support we can offer other young people a chance to lead the life they want and so richly deserve.  Please stand with us in honor of Glenn’s success, and National Foster Care Awareness Month.  Make a donation that will enable us to deliver more good news to another young person who is waiting for our call.
