National foster care data has shown that only 37% of foster youth go onto college, compared to 60% of all high school graduates. However, 70 to 80 percent of youth who are in foster care or transitioning out of foster care express a desire to earn a college degree. For youth in care who do enroll it is just the beginning- only 2% of foster care alumni ages 25-34 receive a bachelor’s degree, compared to 28% of young adults nationally. While there are many barriers to graduation, lack of access to fundamental tools should not be one of them.
Here, at NYFC, we are committed to ensuring these young people have the resources and support needed to become self-sufficient and successful adults. The Back – to – School Package is designed to ensure this by providing eligible scholars with the tools necessary to thrive during their educational or vocational experiences.
The Back-to-School Package is valued at $2,500 and includes a laptop, a MetroCard, and an Amazon gift card to ensure that students can complete their schoolwork, travel to and from school, and to purchase books or other necessary materials.
